10-Key Job Description

When it comes to clerical and administrative work, certain skill sets are required for different jobs. Prowess on the 10-key translates to a good fit in a data-entry, numbers-focused position.

Defining 10-Key

The number and symbol block to the right of the main section of a computer keyboard, a calculator or an adding machine are all 10-key devices.

Measuring 10-Key Prowess

While typing speed is rated in words per minute, 10-key speed is rated in keys per minute. 140 KPM is generally sought for a 10-key data entry position.

Job Demands

10-key job work is highly repetitive. In most cases, the worker transcribes numbers from a stack of forms or a printed list into a database via the 10-key. Attention to detail, tolerance for routine and organizational skills are crucial.

Work Environment

10-key clerks usually work in relative solitude. They have strict, pre-established guidelines to adhere to, and someone frequently checks their work for accuracy.

Requirements & Pay

A high school diploma is usually required to secure this type of work. Work experience of zero to two years is preferred, as this is an hourly, entry-level position.
