How do I Get a Job Delivering Newspapers or Phone Books?

You can make extra money delivering newspapers or phone books while having enough time to hold a second job. Newspaper carriers work year-round, while phone-book distribution could be limited to a few days per year. Delivering phone books allows you to try this vocation before signing up up for a paper route. Newspapers now often use adult motor-route carriers instead of traditional paperboys. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the Fair Labor Standards Act (minimum wage law) does not apply to news organizations when employing youth carriers.

Complete your high school diploma or general equivalency degree (GED) if you have not already done so. The companies that publish newspapers or phone books may not absolutely require a diploma, but others who might be interested in the same job, including retirees, will be chosen ahead of you if they at least finished high school. Without the diploma, you haven't proved to the potential employer that you've completed an essential life task. In addition, you'll need the diploma to pursue other jobs, vocational training or college if the delivery job doesn't work out.

Obtain a driver's license and maintain a clean driving record. Even if the phone book delivery takes place on foot, continued employment may require you to travel outside of your community, where you may be assigned to several neighborhoods. Newspaper carriers typically use a car so they can cover a larger area and increase their earnings. Publishing companies can do without the liability of a poor driving record, so they may not hire you if you're accumulated speeding tickets or had accidents.

Stop at the phone company or newspaper office in person and request an application. Even if you are at the wrong location (some companies have separate distribution or circulation offices), someone there can tell you where to go. If the company has an urgent need for carriers, you may get an interview in the circulation department on the spot. If you inquire by phone, your message might have to compete with messages from other interested carriers whom the hiring manager may or may not get back to.
