Get in a Job Corps Program in Georgia

If you are a teenager or young adult, and are looking for a second chance in life, Job Corps might be your answer. By participating in a Job Corps program, you can receive career and vocational training and you can also receive your high school diploma or GED through the program. You do not have to pay a fee to participate in Job Corps, and you will paid a basic living allowance while you are attending.

Contact an admissions counselor at the Job Corps center that you are interested in attending. Georgia only has three Job Corps centers, which are located in Atlanta, Brunswick and Albany. The contact information for each center can be found on the U.S. Department Of Labor Job Corps website (see Resources for a link). You can also speak with an admissions counselor by calling 800-733-JOBS.

Advise the admissions counselor that you are interested in attending a Job Corps center.

Complete the phone interview with the counselor. During the phone interview, the counselor will ask questions about your income to determine your qualification. You must be considered low income or disabled. You must also be a 16-to-24-year-old United States citizen. Low income is based on the federal poverty guidelines, which vary by family size. For instance, in 2010, a family of two with a total monthly household income of $1,214.17 or less, and a family of four with a total monthly household income of $1,837.50 or less, is considered low income. Complete an enrollment application, which will be mailed to you by the admissions counselor. On the application, you must enter information such as your name, contact information, educational background, criminal background, employment history, household circumstances and family circumstances.

Mail your enrollment application, along with all requested documents, to the address indicated on the application. An example of documents you must send are a photo ID, a copy of your Social Security card, copy of immunization records, copy of school transcripts, income verification and two letters of recommendation.

Take and pass a drug test. The time and location of the drug test will be determined by the admissions counselor. After you pass the drug test, you can start the Job Corps program. If there is no space available, your name will be placed on a waiting list. Your name remains on the waiting list until a space becomes available.
