Entrance into this field requires a formal education and business experience; voluntary certification is also available.

Big Picture Responsibilities

As a commercial manager, you develop pricing structures, resolve marketing problems, oversee contractors and develop working relationships with clients. You comprehend sales breakdowns and examine customer trends, as well as establish and implement department- or company-level sales goals and objectives. Additionally, commercial managers research and discover regulatory practices that aren’t working to meet sales goals and provide new ways to improve these policies. These workers review and scrutinize financial reports to find inconsistencies, as well as negotiate claims disputes.

Management Experts

To be an effective commercial manager, you need to have superior management and organizational skills. You must possess strong negotiation skills and a comprehensive knowledge of the industry you work in. Commercial managers have the skills to develop enduring brand strategies and create consumer value within product. Given that corporate business can be a brutal industry with tight deadlines, you need the capability to handle high levels of stress and the capacity to meet strict deadlines.

Educational Requirements

The path to becoming a commercial manager requires at least a bachelor’s degree. You can earn a bachelor’s degree in several areas, including business, marketing or finance. Advanced education, such as a master’s degree in business administration or marketing management, also may be called for depending on the size of the corporation you are working for, since large corporations with more responsibilities may require advanced education or experience. Previous experience in sales, management or marketing can accelerate your potential as a commercial manager. Commercial managers can earn voluntary industry certification through associations such as the International Association for Contract & Commercial Management. Certifications are available at the associate, practitioner and expert levels.
