Clothing Salesman Job Description

Department stores have salespeople in each section to help customers make selections and answer their questions. These associates have specialized knowledge of the merchandise sold in the department in which they work. The apparel sections are normally broken down into clothing and accessories for men, women and children. A male person who works in these departments is a clothing salesman.

Skill Requirements

Good customer service and presentation skills contribute to the success of a clothing salesman. He needs an engaging personality to greet customers and make them feel comfortable while they discuss their needs and wants with him. Knowledge of sizes, fabrics and style is imperative to a clothing salesman. He must be fashion-conscious and able to match consumer tastes with available stock.

Job Duties

When a customer browses clothing and accessories, the clothing salesman approaches them and offers assistance. He asks questions regarding the person for whom the clothes are for pertaining to size, fabric and color preferences. A clothing salesman points out sale items and recommends accessories to enhance the apparel choices and increase the sale. When customer traffic is slow, he tidies up and restocks his department. His job sometimes includes processing sales and packaging purchased items.

Work Conditions

Retail environments often have wall-to-wall carpeting and the temperatures are comfortable. This keeps customers in the store for longer periods of time. The atmosphere is hectic during sales featuring heavily discounted merchandise and slows during certain hours when many potential customers are at work or school. The type of clothes he sells and his target demographic determines the attire for a clothing salesman. He may work full or part-time and be required to work different shifts during each work week. His work requires him to stand and walk for the duration of his shift.

Educational Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is not mandatory to be a clothing salesman although some employers prefer this as a minimum educational requirement. Applicants who have higher education in fashion merchandising are preferred. Knowledge gained in previous retail clothing sales jobs is desirable.

Salary and Advancement Opportunities

Large retail stores offer promotional opportunities into department supervisor or store manager positions to employees who demonstrate strong customer relations, sales and merchandising skills. National chain stores frequently have formal management trainee programs available to salespersons in all departments. Based on information provided at payscale.com, a clothing salesman in the United States in July 2010 earned between $17,132 and $32,460 per year.
