Civilian Contractor Jobs As a Security Operator

The civilian contract sector for security operators can be rewarding, providing you go into the process with the correct expectations. Employment opportunities are located with a number of companies, both overseas and domestic. These positions range from traditional guard services in suburbia to high-speed specialized services abroad in combat zones. These positions are for professionals, and are far from the normal security guard position.

Types of Security Operator Positions

Contract security operator positions can be found in several different variants. The two greatest distinctions are for domestic protective positions and overseas details. Inside the United States, contractors hire for gate guards for military bases, GSA buildings such as Social Security offices and court security, as well as federal, state and local government buildings and corporate headquarters. Overseas contractors secure housing areas, oil production facilities, supply depots and provide high-risk escorts for convoy and personal protection, among others.

Qualifications for Employment

Security operators require a number of qualifications that are needed just to get an interview. Generally, contractors both domestically and overseas seek out those with prior military and/or law enforcement experience. Due to the nature of the employment, candidates also need to be capable of passing an extensive physical and background check. A background in weapons handling skills is also often sought out.

A relevant resume is the key to a security operator job.

Time Considerations Before Starting Work

It may take considerable time from applying for a job as a security operator before a candidate assumes work with the contractor. The company will often conduct several interviews, a background check and a physical before you are cleared to start training. Overseas work also requires a passport and visa. This process can last several weeks to as long as a year.

Training Programs

Even though most new security contractors have been through training programs in their prior experience, they are usually required to complete the new company's training program. This training can range from 10 to 30 days depending on the company and the position. Alternatively, several training firms offer so-called "operators courses" for those with basic security forces and military backgrounds to polish their skills in preparation for employment.

Training--past, present and future--is in store for any security operator.

Warnings and Misconceptions

Both domestic contract security operatives and those overseas have exceedingly dangerous jobs. The PMC/PSC portal carries a roll call of some 444 security operators killed in the past eight years overseas. Contractors inside the United States aren't safe from harm either, with at least 37 security personnel losing their lives in 2009 alone as listed by Private Officer.
