Chief Scientific Officer Job Description

The job of Chief Scientific Officer can vary from industry to industry, but generally speaking, the position requires that the person employed be the head of a research and development group, overseeing one or more research projects. They might also be in charge of technological developments in a particular company, such as a computer or manufacturing corporation.

Qualifications

A Chief Scientific Officer will usually be at the top of their profession, with a Ph. D and/or a medical degree. They will usually have one or more college degrees in the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics), or computer technology or engineering. They will also usually be members of scientific societies and the holder of various recognized achievement awards.

Experience and Background

A Chief Scientific Officer will have several years of experience in research, and in leadership roles. In most instances, they will be required to have published the findings of previous research in at least one reputable academic journal as evidence of a proven track record of research and results. They may have already served as a deputy to a Chief Scientific Officer or have particular expertise in an area of research of interest to the company hiring them. For a technology corporation, a Chief Scientific Officer will have a track record of innovation and achievement in computing or technological advancement.

Temperament and Personality

A Chief Scientific Officer needs to be enthusiastic, studious, patient and persistent. They should be able to work well as part of a team but show clear leadership qualities, as well as flexibility. They oversee all aspects of the research and delegate as needed to ensure all of the work is completed in a timely manner. They should be able to collaborate well with a wide variety of participants in the research undertaken. They should also be able to work well with senior management in the corporation or research institute. They need to be very exacting in their record-keeping and report writing. They need to possess both scientific curiosity and ability, and business acumen.

Roles and Requirements

A Chief Scientific Officer might have to liaise with governmental agencies or potential partners or investors. They might need to present research updates to agencies or investors. They may be responsible for hiring and firing their own staff, and assigning duties directly.

Other Skills

A Chief Scientific Officer must be able to think strategically, and will be expected to implement their strategies. They prioritize all tasks within each research project. They will be at least partly responsible for retaining staff on the research projects, and both supervising them and ensuring their welfare. They must maintain lab safety and appropriate protocols at all times. A CSO will maintain quality control and high standards throughout the lifecycle of each project.
