Careers That Make Fitness Type People Happy

If you love fitness and being fit, you can transition your interest into a career. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008, about 261,000 people worked in the fitness industry, with that number expected to grow to about 338,000 by 2018. The median annual wage for someone working in fitness was about $29,000 in 2008 with the high end earning $60,000 or more. Jobs in fitness range from fitness trainers to managers of fitness centers.

Personal Trainers

Personal trainers provide one-on-one instruction to clients. Such trainers fill a niche in the fitness industry. As a personal trainer, you might see your clients in a gym or at their homes. You'll stay fit as you demonstrate regimens that you recommend to your clients, and, in many cases, you will work out with your clients. Your personal business will rely on your knowledge of fitness, from the best way to exercise to the best foods to eat, and you will have the freedom to set your own schedule.

Fitness Instructors

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the opportunities for fitness instructors will increase through the 2018 at a rate of 29 percent, far greater than the average. Fitness instructors find work in venues ranging from fitness centers to rehabilitation units. The main task of a fitness instructor is to instruct, lead, and motivate individuals and groups in physical activities such as aerobics and other cardiovascular activities, strength and weight training, and even group sports such as volleyball or basketball. You'll spend most of your time working with individuals, sharing what you love and know, while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Management

Managers lead and direct staff, drive membership and marketing programming, and interact with clients. In a management role, you'll be responsible for hiring and training staff, maintaining schedules and troubleshooting problems. You may procure equipment, allocate space, and oversee client exercise programming. In many cases, your involvement with clients is indirect.

Sales

Sales in the fitness industry can take several forms, from selling equipment, services, or products to health and fitness clubs to selling memberships and your own services You might also find jobs selling fitness equipment or fitness items such as nutritional supplements and vitamins, exercise videos, weights, and exercise equipment, to name a few. Your passion for fitness is important because you are selling not only the products and services, but you are also selling a lifestyle.
