Careers in Music Marketing

Music marketing is a discipline that has representatives in many types of companies and organizations. It is a field in which musical knowledge can be as important as training in the techniques of marketing or publicity. As a result, music marketing is a viable field for former music students or professionals who are seeking career change and are willing to learn the marketing side of the business.

Record Companies

Recording firms employ marketing representatives whose job is to track and report record sales and airplay in regional markets. Other positions related to marketing are publicists, who work to keep artists' names in the news; public relations staff, who create large-scale publicity campaigns; promotional staffers who seek radio airplay; and consumer researchers.

Musical Nonprofit Organizations

Marketing directors and support staff are employed at symphony orchestras, opera and ballet companies, concert venues and presenting organizations. Their main task is to design and create brochures, websites and mailings to sell tickets to performances.

Radio Stations

Marketing directors and staff promote the radio station's programming and special events such as sponsored live concerts.

Publishers

One of the functions of a "song plugger" at a music publishing house is to seek artists willing to record the company's published songs. Publishers also employ their own marketing staffs to promote their sheet music and related products.

Talent Agencies, Concert Promoters and Tour Support

Every talent agency that represents musicians employs one or more publicists to liaise with media outlets in the service of promoting musical acts or individual artists. Concert promoters that bring acts to town, as well as the tour support organizations that promoters deal with, employ publicists and marketing staff.
