Careers for Burned Out Teachers

Teachers who burn out may no longer feel they can be effective enough in the classroom to perform day-to-day duties necessary to educate students. Burnout can involve unexplained exhaustion, fatigue, frustration and hopelessness. While teaching may not be possible for someone who has lost enthusiasm to this extent, opportunities are available that make good use of a teacher's background and knowledge as an educator.

Coaching

Teachers who are burned out working in a classroom can still work with students on the court or on the field. Those who have an interest in athletics may be able to use their teaching background to coach football, basketball, baseball, soccer or other sports. Coaches at the high school and college level may be required to have a background in education. Former teachers who want to coach high school students may need to supplement their income with another job, while assistant college coaches may have other duties on campus.

Tutoring

Teachers who no longer want to work in the classroom can also use their skills to tutor students. Many parents will hire former teachers to help their children improve grades in school. While elementary school children may need help with their reading and writing, junior high students may need assistance with science and math. During the college admission process, students hire tutors to help them with their SAT or ACT tests and with their college essays.

School Administration

Career-weary teachers can stay in the educational field and move into an administration role at a school. This is an opportunity for teachers to continue helping students achieve their educational goals without having to deal directly with students all day long. Using their past classroom experience, such an administrator can help improve classroom conditions for students and teachers. While some teachers may start off as assistant principals in larger schools, career opportunities may be available as principals right away in smaller school systems.

Writer

Opportunities are also available for former teachers to pursue writing jobs as a career. While former teachers can write about any subject that interests them, English teachers may want to pursue creative writing opportunities. Social studies teachers can develop content for textbooks. Science and math teachers can do well as technical writers who help make technical information easily understandable.
