Career Objectives for Management Consultants

Management consulting is a popular career choice for business school graduates. Consultants typically focus on information systems, strategy, operations or a combination of these areas. Information systems consulting consists of designing and implementing the information technology for all business purposes, including human resources and management. Strategy consultants help a business choose an overall direction, while operations consultants focus on improving business processes. The career objectives for management consultants provide an overview of the career ladder.

Analyst Position

People typically begin a career in consulting as an analyst. It is the most junior of the career positions in the consulting world. Analysts will typically have an undergraduate degree in commerce, business, economics, or a similar discipline. As an analyst, an individual will have the chance to learn the basics of the management consulting industry. This stage, which usually lasts two years, is as much about learning as about performing a job. After two years, an analyst will usually be asked to obtain an MBA degree or move on to other career options.

Consultant Position

After completing an MBA degree, a worker will generally be assigned to the position of consultant. It's also possible to enter a firm at the consultant level with an MBA. Consultants perform the bulk of the duties, working directly with clients, handling accounts and working on project teams. At this level, an employee is expected to have a solid knowledge of methodologies. Management consultants are the problem solvers for Fortune 500 companies, and they must be capable of providing insightful advice to important clients.

Manager or Partner

After working as a consultant, the possibility exists to be promoted to the management or partner level. As a manager, a person will continue to act as a consultant but will be assigned to more important clients. A manager is also responsible for managing accounts that may require several consultants. A manager must be able to coordinate work and ensure that clients are satisfied. In firms that are arranged as partnerships, a manager will be a partner, or part owner of the business. This provides ample opportunity for high earnings because partners share in the profits.
