Calculate Length of Employment in Excel

Microsoft Excel is a number-crunching program that can effortlessly calculate the length of employment. This calculation usually involves just two pieces of data -- the dates that the employee began and ended working for the organization. However, date-based information commonly includes letters when expressing the month, such as "January" and "December." Entering words in a spreadsheet can hamper your attempts at arriving at an accurate numerical calculation of the length of employment. If this is your predicament, you can take two simplified approaches to doing the math on these dates, and eliminate the problems of inputting letters.

Formula

Launch the Microsoft Excel application. Open a blank worksheet by pressing the "Ctrl" and "N" keys on the keyboard. Alternatively, click the "New" icon at the top of the window, which resembles a blank sheet of paper.

Click on the cell at address "A1." Type the start date of employment similar to one of the following formats: "01-2011" or "01-15-2011." Press "Enter" to deactivate the cell.

Click on the cell at address "B1." Type the end date of employment, such as "04-2011" or "04-15-2011." Press "Enter."

Click on the cell at address "C1." Type the following formula: " =B1-A1 ." Press "Enter." Cell "C1" shows the subtraction of the starting date of employment from the ending date of employment, in days. Continuing with the example dates shown in previous steps, the formula works out in the following manner: (04-2011) - (01-2011) = 90 days; (04-15-2011) - (01-15-2011) = 90 days.

Function

Open a blank worksheet in Microsoft Excel.

Type the starting employment date in cell "A1." Press "Enter."

Type the ending employment date in cell "B1." Press "Enter."

Type the following function in cell "C1": " =DAYS360(B1,A1)." Press "Enter." The value in cell C1 represents the number of days of employment from start to end.
