Business Careers That Require Travel

For people who wish to pursue a business career but don't want to spend their time behind a desk or in an office, there are various jobs that require travel. Depending on the position and the company you work for, the travel could be local, regional, national or even international. While the travel aspect can be enjoyable, individuals must be prepared to spend extended time away from friends and family.

Sales Representatives

Sales representatives travel to homes and businesses to make presentations to clients and prospective buyers. They typically have an assigned geographic territory they are responsible for covering. Depending on the size of the territory, overnight travel may be required. Some firms provide their sales representatives with company vehicles.

Regional Managers

Regional managers oversee a territory of locations in a chain operation. For example, a regional manager in a restaurant chain will visit each facility to ensure it is operating efficiently and to consult with restaurant personnel about changes in procedure. A regional manager may also work in sales and oversee the work of several sales representatives.

Merchandising Representatives

Merchandising representatives work for product manufacturers and suppliers. They visit retail stores that carry the product lines they represent to ensure that the product is on the sales floor and in the appropriate location, as well as in displays. They also perform resets, where products are physically moved to accommodate changes in the store's layout.

Mystery Shopper

Mystery shoppers perform a type of surveillance for businesses that wish to assess things like the cleanliness of a location or the quality of service. The mystery shopper poses as a regular customer and observes the operation and how well he is treated by the staff. After leaving the facility, the mystery shopper fills out an evaluation form and returns it to the business owner or the mystery shopping firm that employed him. In return, the shopper receives payment and/or free products or services.

Business Consultant

Business consultants are experts in a specific field and provide their expertise to organizations that hire them. Consultants may travel to a business location and spend time observing and evaluating the operation. When their assessment is finished, consultants provide the company's management team with recommendations on how the business can improve its operations.
