The Best Medical Careers for an Associate Degree

Although doctors and pharmacists have to endure many years of schooling, there are positions within the medical field that only require an associate degree. Many of these careers are under the direct supervision of a physician and duties may vary per state and facility. Most medical careers needing an associate degree require candidates to obtain licensing through schooling and passing an examination.

Dental Hygienists

Dental hygienists, working under the direction of dentists, provide preventive dental care, remove deposits from teeth, and educate patients on dental care. The specific duties of dental hygienists vary per state. Some states allow dental hygienists to prepare fillings and use anesthetics. Students can enroll in a dental hygienist school with a high school diploma and acceptable test scores. Mathematics, biology, and chemistry are classes high school students should excel in if wanting to attend dental hygienist school. A state license is required for dental hygienists who wish to practice. Nearly all states require students to attend an accredited dental hygienist school and pass an examination. The examination is administered by the American Dental Association's (ADA) Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations and accepted in all states and the District of Columbia. Dental hygienist jobs are expected to grow by 36 percent through 2018, which is a much faster pace than the national average for all occupations.

Physical Therapist Assistants

Physical therapist assistants provide help to physical therapists and aid patients in the improvement of mobility, relieve pain, and reduce and prevent disabilities of patients. A physical therapist assistant may work with a patient involved in an accident or who has a physical condition such as arthritis, back pain, fractures or cerebral palsy. A physical therapist assistant may teach a patient how to use crutches, provide massages, assist in therapy sessions, and record the patient's responses to treatments. Most states require physical therapist assistants to have an associate degree from an accredited post-secondary physical therapy assistant program and pass the National Physical Therapy Exam. Physical therapist assistant jobs are expected to grow by 35 percent through 2018.

Licensed Practical Nurse

A licensed practical nurse (LPN) works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician and provides basic bedside care for sick, injured, or disabled patients. LPNs take and record vital signs, give injections and enemas, dress wounds, and monitor catheters. LPNs may also assist patients with feeding, dressing and personal hygiene, if necessary. LPNs work 40-hour weeks and may work nights, holidays and weekends. Those interested in a career as an LPN must pass a state-approved training program in practical nursing and pass the National Council Licensure Examination. LPN jobs are expected to grow by 21 percent through 2018.

Respiratory Therapists

A respiratory therapist, working under the direct supervision of a physician, treats patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory therapists supervise respiratory therapy technicians and provide respiratory care therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures to patients. Patients vary from newborns with undeveloped lungs to seniors with lung disease. Training for respiratory therapists is offered by colleges and universities, medical schools, vocational-technical institutes, and the armed forces, where students are awarded an associate degree. Students study anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics, microbiology, pharmacology, mathematics and other courses that deal directly with diagnostics. Licenses are required in most states to practice as a respiratory therapist. Respiratory therapist jobs are expected to grow by 21 percent through 2018.
