The Best Jobs for Writers

Writers produce a wide variety of written material across several formats. The competition for jobs is strong and many employers require candidates to have degrees in communication, journalism or English. Writers are responsible for conducting their own research and producing original material for books, magazines, journals and online publications. Their work is classified as fiction or nonfiction and many are identified by a specific field. With the growing number of online services, there's an increasing demand for writers with multimedia experience.

Technical Writer

The job of a technical writer often involves translating technical jargon into easy-to-understand terms. Technical writers produce the text for operating manuals and assembly instructions, and they may also work in the engineering, healthcare or scientific fields. Some technical writers work full time, while others work on a freelance basis. There's expected to be an increase of almost 9,000 technical writing positions in the U.S. -- growth of 18 percent -- by 2018, a good sign for those with strong writing skills and technical acumen.

Magazine Writer

Landing a role as a magazine writer can be one of the most financially rewarding writing jobs. Writers can earn up to $2 per word for work published in leading magazines, while less-publicized magazines typically pay at least $1 per word. Writers can also gain exposure to millions of readers each month. The magazine industry can be a tough nut to crack; persistence and perseverance are key to catching an editor's eye.

Newspaper Writer

Writing for a newspaper can be extremely stressful as deadlines are often very tight, but working for a local newspaper is a good way to get your foot in the door. Newspapers employ both staff writers and freelancers, but assignments are typically far less financially rewarding than those offered by magazines, and most writers tend to focus on a certain subject area. Having a journalism degree can give you a sizable advantage when you're trying to break into the industry.

Online Writer

Writing for online publications can be a great job for both new and experienced writers, and it's one that allows you to work from home. Tasks include writing articles, newsletters, blogs, and press releases for various clients and companies. The rate of pay for web content writers can range anywhere from a few cents to more than $1 per word. The most successful writers typically have a background in journalism, communications or English.

Fiction Writer

Becoming a successful fiction writer can be an extremely lucrative career, but it's also the toughest writing position in which to succeed. Fiction writers don't require any formal qualifications, yet many still have a background in journalism or English. Writing a novel can require years of dedication and countless submissions to publishers.
