The Best First Jobs for High School Students

If you are a high school student, chances are you want a job to earn a bit of extra spending money. Earning your own money means you don't need to depend entirely on your parents to buy you what you want. Being in high school, you don't have a lot of time or experience for the perfect, full-time job. However, there are many jobs that welcome teenagers.

Restaurants

Most restaurants, especially casual ones, employ high school students and work with their busy schedules. Young high school students may begin working in a fast-food restaurant as a cashier or cook. If you are older, consider working in a full-service restaurant as a server. Servers have the potential to make a nice amount of money because they get nearly all of their income from tips. If the restaurant serves alcohol, you might need to be over a certain age in your state to be a server.

Grocery Stores

Many students find their first jobs in grocery stores. Younger students usually take work stocking new products on the shelves. They may also work as a bagger. These workers bag customer's groceries at the checkout. They also do small tasks, like cleaning spills and collecting shopping carts in the parking lot. Working as a cashier is another option. As a cashier, you scan customer's groceries as they come through your checkout line. Some stores have other areas where you can work, including the produce, deli and meat departments, or the bakery.

Retail Jobs

If you live in a busy city, you probably have many retail stores from which to choose. Consider your interests before applying at a store. For instance, you might apply to a pet store, movie rental store or clothing store. Your duties will be specific to the store you choose, but in general, your job is to help customers. For instance, in a clothing store, you might help customers find the perfect dress. In a hardware store, you might make recommendations about the best tools for certain situations. Retail jobs are usually very flexible for high school students.

Office Tasks

Depending on your age, you might get a job in an office, helping with clerical duties such as sending e-mails and organizing paperwork. Many offices need employees to answer the phones and interact with customers. If you have a professional appearance, a company might be willing to give you a chance. Also, consider trying a local temp agency, which places workers with various companies on a temporary basis.

Make Your Own Job

If you live in a small town, or can't find a job, you might try being your own boss. Offer to babysit your neighbor's kids, or mow their lawn. If you do a good job, you might build a steady clientele who ask for your services. You can also wash cars or take care of pets while a family is on vacation. If you're tech-savvy, build websites for people who want them, or teach people how to use a computer. Working for yourself lets you set your own schedule, as well as how much you'll earn.
