The Best Adventure Jobs

Some people live to work; others work to live. There's no reason that the two have to be mutually exclusive, though. Some jobs offer engaging adventure that exceeds what most people do in their free time. Enjoy the lifestyle you love while earning money for it with one of these top adventure jobs.

Guide

No matter whether you're passion is skiing, hiking, climbing, whitewater rafting or something else, chances are that you spend much of your time staring longingly out the window dreaming of new challenges. As a guide in your preferred sport, you'll tackle those challenges while on the clock. Ski guides, for instance, get to ski some of the freshest powder and gnarliest terrain while earning their daily paycheck. You'll become familiar with places that few ever get to see, learn new skills and improve old ones, and meet others who share your passion -- and you'll get paid the whole while.

Adventure Journalist

The journalists, writers and photographers in magazines like Outside and National Geographic may have inspired you, by jumping to the other side of the magazine, you could be living the adventures of your dreams. Whether you're reporting on the lives and happenings of others or telling your own tales of great adventure, you'll be paid to travel to exotic places and inspire a new generation of adventurers with your stories, reports and pictures. You can even have a positive influence on protecting the environment.

Filmmaker

In today's world of 3D movies, HD television and viral videos, the video medium is much in demand. A filmmaker can film documentaries of exotic locations and happenings; follow top outdoor athletes and document their expeditions; or travel the world and film your story. Similar to writers and photographers, you'll get to live a life of adventure and share it with others through your art. Like journalists, your films and videos can alert viewers to environmental issues.

Park Ranger

America's national parks are home to some of the most beautiful, serene and rugged terrain in the world. Park rangers are the expert liaisons to the park system. In November 2011, MSNBC ranked park rangers as one of "10 fun jobs that pay well," listing an average salary of $47,000.
