Benefit Consultant Job Description

Company benefit programs are often so complicated that it is hard to determine what coverage and benefits to which you are entitled. Benefits consultants help employees understand their benefit programs to ensure they get the most out of them.

Roles

Benefit consultants serve a few different roles. They primarily work with company benefit plans offered to employees, such as health benefits, various perks, and financial packages like pensions and 401K plans. These programs are complicated, and benefit consultants help people understand their nuances to select the best options. Benefit consultants can work in-house for large companies or as consultants for hire.

In-House Benefit Consultants

Employee benefit consultants that work within large companies help these organizations design, develop and implement employee benefits programs. Such programs include pensions, 401K plans, and health, dental and life insurance. Benefit consultants also advise company employees on available benefit options. Benefit consultants often work on mergers or acquisitions to determine how to blend various benefits programs.

External Consultants

External benefit consultants design and implement employee benefit programs for small to medium-sized companies. For example, a company rolling out employee health insurance coverage might hire a benefit consultant for logistics and budgeting advice.

Typical Workday

A typical workday for a benefit consultant includes pension or 401K accounting, developing new insurance or retirement programs, researching any new legislation and how it could affect benefit programs, and answering employees' questions or advising them on benefits.

Individual Consultations

In addition to companies, benefit consultants often work with individuals. Clients may hire benefit consultants to explain their social security, insurance or company retirement benefits. Benefit consultants also help in disability disputes.
