A Banquet Houseman's Job Description

In addition to providing guests with lodging, hotels often have banquet halls for rent. Running these banquet hall functions are housemen,expert caterers who are responsible for all aspects of the banquet hall functions. These professonals must be experienced in handling dining rooms and need first-rate people skills.

Function

Banquet housemen are responsible for making sure that all elements of the banquet are set up. Before each banquet, the banquet houseman receives instructions on how the banquet is supposed to be set up. The banquet houseman sets up all necessary banquet supplies, checking that the food is being prepared, making sure the banquet is aesthetically pleasing and checking the hall's cleanliness. During the banquet, the banquet houseman is responsible for resolving customer service issues, according to Destination Hotels and Resorts. Guests are given information regarding the banquet in question. Guests must also be greeted by the houseman. Once the event is finished, the banquet houseman is responsible for tearing down the supplies.

Conditions

Banquet housemen can work irregular hours because banquets can be held at all times of the day, though banquets tend to be held later at night when more people are off from work. They work in crowded and noisy environments where falls and spills sometimes occur.

Skills

Banquet housemen need a high school diploma. They usually need previous experience in a customer service position. These housemen must often have a food handler card and an OLCC card, which is a liquor license. Banquet housemen need top-notch interpersonal skills, since the houseman must continually be charming to the guests. They must have good mental composure since they must be able to work well under pressure. They must be detail-oriented since they must follow instructions perfectly and must notice when something is not in order.

Outlook

Between 2008 and 2018, jobs in the food service industry such as banquet housemen are projected to grow 8 percent. This growth is mostly driven by population growth and is not growing as rapidly as the other industries because of other competing food service establishments.

Earnings

In 2008, the median weekly earnings for banquet housemen and other food service workers were $233, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
