Audit Career Objectives

Auditors analyze accounting records to prepare financial reports and determine the financial status of a company. They also review account books and accounting systems to ensure they are accurate and efficient for the company. Auditors conduct financial investigations and determine tax liability.

Duties

An auditor's duties include verifying bank or financial transactions, noting any discrepancies in financial records, computing financial data and using cost benefit analysis techniques. He must also write business correspondence, confer with the taxpayer or representative and make presentations on financial matters.

Public Auditors

Public accountants and auditors offer auditing and tax services as well as consulting activities for nonprofit organizations, governments, corporations or individuals. They usually prepare individual income tax returns, offer advice on employee health care benefits and compensation, and design accounting and data processing systems.

Government Auditors

Government accountants and auditors examine and maintain the accounting records of government agencies. They also audit private businesses and individuals with activities that are subject to government taxation regulations. Government accountants and auditors also ensure that all revenues received and expenditures made comply with laws and regulations.

Management Accountants and Auditors

Management accountants and auditors take charge of cost management, budgeting, asset management and performance evaluation. They prepare reports for creditors, tax authorities, stockholders and regulatory agencies. An auditor also interprets all financial information needed to make sound business decisions.

Internal Auditors

Internal auditors verify the effectiveness of the internal controls of the organization for which they work. They must also check for fraud, mismanagement and waste. Internal auditors also review and recommend controls for their company's computer systems to make sure that all systems are reliable and that data remains secure.

Working Conditions

Most auditors work a standard 40-hour workweek, but some work longer hours. Most auditors work in office settings, while others do a portion of their work at home. Tax specialists are the busiest during tax season. Performing audits at different business facilities may require some travel.

Additional Info

Most auditing jobs require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Some employers, however, require a master's degree. This varies by employer. The average annual salary for an auditor was between $60,000 and $70,000 in 2009, according to MyPlan.com.
