Get A Job In Aquarium Maintenance

Using typical employment search websites in an effort to find a vacancy for a position in a field such as "aquarium maintenance" is not very productive. For example, such a search on indeed.com — one of the most comprehensive employment-related websites — as of the date of publication yielded only one listing: "Animal Research and Care Center Intern" with Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey, California. The source of that ad, however, is the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, which may represent the best resource for finding employment helping to maintain an aquarium.

Study biology, marine biology, icthology, chemistry, math and other science courses. You may be able to take transferable courses at your local community college, but for a degree in aquarium science you will need to find a college offering a program in that course of study. Colleges offering aquarium science programs include Oregon Coast Community College, which offers a one-year program and a two-year program. Major universities on the East Coast and the West Coast offer courses of study that will qualify individuals for employment in a zoo and/or aquarium setting.

Visit the Association of Zoos & Aquariums website, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Job Listings" in the left-hand corner.

Use the "Search Jobs" function to locate posted vacancies in zoos and aquariums throughout the United States. A search for "aquarium" on the date of publication yielded 29 vacancies that had been listed between July 1 and July 24, 2011.

Apply for positions posted on the Association of Zoos & Aquariums jobs listings page in accordance with the instructions included at the bottom of each posting. Some will ask that you submit a resume; others will provide links to their human resources departments and the capability of completing and submitting an online application.
