Apply for a Principal's Job

Principals play an important role in the operation and management of elementary, middle and high schools. They are responsible for serving as a supervisor to teachers and staff while also making administrative decisions about school policies, operations and the students the school serves. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 230,000 individuals are employed as school principals. You can join this profession yourself -- with the required credentials and background -- by applying for a principal's job.

Find an open position. Review popular career websites such as CareerBuilder and Monster to learn which schools in your area or across the U.S. are hiring principals for the next school year. Visit websites specifically geared to recruiting principals, teachers and other school employees such as the National Association of Elementary School Principals, Education America and Cooperating School Districts. Network with administrators and teachers from school districts in your area to learn of open principal positions.

Submit an application. Put together your resume highlighting your education and experience using bullet points. Draft a cover letter that provides more detail about your experience and explains why you are the right candidate for the principal's job. Provide copies of transcripts, reference letters or other documents needed for your application to be complete.

Attend interviews. Complete a phone interview with the hiring committee for the principal's job. Follow up this interview with an in-person interview that allows you to meet teachers, students and other administrators while touring the school and learning more about the job.

Seek approval. Attend a board of education meeting to get approval to be hired for the principal's job. Meet board members and answer any questions they or constituents in the audience may have. Allow them to vote on whether to hire you for the principal's job, and sign a contract with them accepting the job if you are approved.
