Apply for a Nursing Job in New Zealand

More often than not, New Zealand hospitals and clinics face a shortage of nurses, which presents an exciting opportunity for nurses from across the globe to gain job experience in a particularly beautiful part of the world.

Check the Shortage List

Twice a year, New Zealand Immigration publishes an updated "skills shortage list." Usually, nursing appears on that list. Check the list (see References below) before proceeding any further, because with few exceptions, non-New Zealand citizens/residents are not given work permits for nursing jobs unless nursing appears on the long term skills shortage list.

Decide whether or not to use a recruitment agency. If you want to find a job through a global medical recruitment agency, you have several to choose from. Options include Clinical One, Tonix, and Geneva Health (see Resources below). If you don't know much about the nursing scene in New Zealand, an agency can help you find a hospital or clinic that's a good fit, and they will also usually help you get through the process of getting a work visa, relocating and getting the proper nursing registration to work in New Zealand. If you don't want to use a recruitment agency, contact hospitals or clinics directly. Sometimes they will have their own recruitment staff, and sometimes you'll need to speak to someone in human resources in order to inquire about job opportunities.

Get a job offer. Your official job offer will allow you to apply for your work permit. You cannot get a work permit before you have a job offfer, unless you are coming to New Zealand as the partner or spouse of a New Zealand citizen or resident, or a non-New Zealand citizen/resident who already has a job offer for a position appearing on the skills shortage list. See NZ Immigration's website for more info (see References below)

Apply for a work permit. A detailed guide to this process is available on NZ Immigration's website. If you are not using a recruitment agency, you might want to get assistance from a lawyer.

Get registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ). Getting registered with the NCNZ means having your credentials assessed and verified to make sure you are qualified to practice nursing in New Zealand. See the NZNC website for more details (see References).
