About Careers in Physical Science

Although the two fields trend towards convergence, physical sciences tend to be considered anything that is not directly related to biology or the study of life. Jobs in the physical sciences vary considerably but almost always require a postsecondary degree to achieve an entry-level position.

Chemists and Material Scientists

Chemists and material scientists require a minimum of a bachelor's degree to obtain employment. A master's or Ph.D. degree opens up additional opportunities for research positions. Chemists often work in labs or offices for companies that develop products like cleaners, pharmaceuticals and plastics. They also work in universities and colleges as researchers and teachers. Compared to the projected growth of the labor market as a whole, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the growth in demand for chemists between 2012 and 2022 will be 6 percent, slower than the 11 percent growth for all occupations.

Careers in Physics and Astronomy

Physicists and astronomers usually require a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy to obtain a job in academic research while those seeking jobs in applied physics typically need a master's degree for research and development positions with manufacturers and healthcare companies. These positions, which are usually performed indoors in labs and offices, involve complex math and data manipulation, as well as the ability to create and communicate written proposals. The BLS projects that demand for physicists and astronomers will rise at a rate of 10 percent between 2012 and 2022, slightly below the average for all occupations.

Geoscientist Careers

The minimum education for geoscientist jobs tends to be a bachelor's degree in geoscience, although related fields may be accepted depending on the nature of the position. Some positions necessitate a master's degree while academic research and teaching careers require a Ph.D. degree. Geoscientists work both outdoors and inside offices and laboratories, collecting and analyzing samples, creating geological reports and charts while passing along the results to their colleagues. The demand for geoscientists, according to the BLS, projects to rise quicker than most occupations, at a pace of 16 percent between 2012 and 2022. Much of the growth derives from energy companies seeking natural resources and other land management issues, including environmental conservation.

Physical Sciences Engineers

A wide variety of engineering occupations involve physical sciences, ranging from aerospace engineers and computer hardware engineers to civil engineers and materials engineers. These jobs usually require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in their related fields. Many engineers focus on applying science to provide solutions for manufacturers, consumers and other stakeholders, like government agencies. The latest statistics from the National Science Foundation show that engineers experience less than half the unemployment compared to the U.S. labor force as a whole and receive more than double the average pay.
